toys of the 1950’s
Here is a list of some toys that came out in the 1950’s.
Barbie- This toy came out in 1959 and debuted in the American toy fair in New York City. Ruth Handler is one of the founders of Mattel and the inventor of the Barbie Doll. Recently I watched a short clip of this inventor on the Biography channel. From my memory this toy was first made for adults.
Play Do.
Noah and Joseph McVicker created a non-toxic product to remove wallpaper. A teacher ask them if they could make a safe clay material for structures kids could use. The creators one year later created a company called Rainbow Crafts Company to sell what is now called Play Do. It started out only in white and now is many colors.
Frisbee was created in the 1950’s. The original Frisbee was a metal plate sold on the bottom of their pies. This was intended to be a great marketing tool for them. In the 1940’s students started throwing them around and catching them. Walter Frederick Morrison created a product because he was into flying saucers at the time. This was the era of UFO’s. He sold the idea of the disc to Wam O and then then started marketing and selling the toys.
Tonka Trucks. I even grew up with one of these super fun toys. A group of teachers tried selling garden tools and failed. They made some toys from the left over material and named the truck after lake Minnetonka.
